The Living Root Bridges of Meghalaya – Nature’s Masterpiece, Crafted by Time
A Collaboration with Department of Tourism, Government of Meghalaya.
Meghalaya, the “Abode of Clouds,” is world-renowned for its living root bridges — natural architectural wonders that beautifully embody the harmony between people and nature. These bridges, found deep within the lush rainforests of the Khasi and Jaintia Hills, are formed through a unique and centuries-old tradition passed down from generation to generation.
Made from the aerial roots of ancient rubber trees (Ficus elastica), these bridges are grown, not built. Over time, the people of Meghalaya have learned to train and weave the roots across rivers and streams, patiently nurturing them for decades until they become strong, living pathways. The result is a breathtaking fusion of human ingenuity and ecological balance — a true symbol of sustainability and coexistence.
The most famous among them is the Double Decker Living Root Bridge in Nongriat village — a two-tiered marvel that stands as a testament to the patience, skill, and respect the Khasi people have for their natural surroundings. Walking across these bridges feels like stepping into another world, where nature itself guides your path and every root tells a story of resilience and care.
These bridges are not only functional but also a reflection of Meghalaya’s deep-rooted cultural wisdom — a way of life that teaches us how humans can thrive in harmony with nature, rather than against it.
